About the Workshop
This professional development workshop prepares English language educators to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) effectively into their teaching practice. Participants will explore current tools, techniques, and pedagogical strategies for designing engaging and effective language learning experiences, whilst also developing approaches to streamline administrative tasks. Structured working time is provided for participants to apply AI tools directly to courses they are currently teaching, both with the facilitator and in small groups.
The workshop is organised into six modules:
-
1. Introduction and Theoretical Frameworks
A review of the evolution of AI and foundational understanding of current AI technologies. Covers ethical considerations and technology integration frameworks SAMR and TPACK applied to ESL/EFL contexts.
-
2. Selecting and Evaluating AI Technologies
Skills to critically evaluate and select appropriate AI tools. Criteria for assessing quality and effectiveness, with a focus on accessibility and inclusive pedagogical design.
-
3. Differentiating Instruction with AI Tools
Using AI to tailor instruction and support personalised learning pathways. Introduction to NLP, chatbots, and adaptive learning for diverse classroom ability levels.
-
4. Creating "Presence" with AI Tools
Leveraging AI through the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model (Garrison et al., 1999) to enhance Social Presence, Teaching Presence, and Cognitive Presence.
-
5. Assessment and Feedback with AI Tools
Using AI for formative and summative assessment and personalised feedback. Emphasis on performance-based design and academic integrity in AI-enhanced assessment.
-
6. Collaborative Learning Environments with AI
Integrating AI tools to support seamless peer and instructor collaboration in online settings — covering ideation, brainstorming, team building, and engagement.
