Mobile Language Learning: Foundations and Opportunities

Abstract

Mobile language learning is not a new concept, but its potential continues to expand. As technology evolves — with AI increasingly integrated into mobile tools — and as learners engage more habitually with content whilst on the move, mobile tools offer expanding opportunities for flexible, engaging, and personalised language learning. This session examines different conceptions of mobile learning and their implications for pedagogy, considers learning theories that can inform MALL practice, and reviews the general scope of MALL applications. Participants will explore the needs of mobile language learners, principles for designing effective mobile learning experiences, and the metacognitive skills that MALL can support. The session also addresses the benefits and limitations of MALL, strategies for ensuring productive learning experiences, and approaches to teacher peer support in experimenting with mobile tools.

Professor Agnes Kukulska-Hulme

Professor Emerita of Learning Technology and Communication, Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, UK

Agnes Kukulska-Hulme is Professor Emerita of Learning Technology and Communication at The Open University, UK. Over more than forty years in academia, she has developed expertise in mobile learning, online distance education, migrant and refugee learning, and self-directed language learning. She serves on the editorial and advisory boards of several scholarly journals and is a Past-President of the International Association for Mobile Learning. Her scholarly output includes more than 300 academic publications, co-edited volumes, and policy and practice reports commissioned by UNESCO, the British Council, the Commonwealth of Learning, the International Research Foundation for English Language Education, and Cambridge University Press. Professor Kukulska-Hulme has led and contributed to numerous large-scale research projects in the United Kingdom and internationally, addressing the roles of digital, AI-enabled, and mobile technologies and the English language in higher education, informal learning, and teachers’ professional development.
